Stocks open higher as Dow looks to extend advance into record


U.S. stocks moved higher at the start of Thursday’s session as investors discounted the riots in Washington D.C. and instead looked forward to the potential for more fiscal stimulus under a Democratic-controlled Congress. The Dow Jones Industrial Average advanced 144 points, or 0.5%, to 30,975. The S&P 500 rose 0.7% to 3,773, surpassing its previous record close of 3,756.07 set on Dec. 31. The Nasdaq Composite gained 1.1% to 12,886.
