Christmas spending to reach £26bn as almost £500 will be spent per

An average of £390 will be spent on presents per person with people buying gifts for eight people

Total Christmas spending during the festive season will hit £26bn this year with the average person spending some £491 as adults believe this Christmas is a great opportunity to make up for last year’s missed one, a study from digital board game group Marmalade Game Studio shows.

59% of people questioned anticipate spending more this year than last Christmas, while 52% expect to exceed their Christmas 2019 spending before the pandemic had begun, it said.

“Many people are clearly determined to make up for lost time when compared with last Christmas and see this year as a chance to properly celebrate despite current nervousness around the pandemic,” said Marmalade Game Studio co-chief executive Michael Willis.

An average of £390 will be spent on presents per person with people buying gifts for eight people, on average, while 21% will purchase gifts for 11 or more people.

53% intend to host family and friends during the festive season with 64% hoping to visit friends and family.

Just 9% hosted all their family and friends last festive season, while 27% hosted some, the study found.

Some 11% plan to spend more on games this Christmas, while Marmalade saw downloads for its family-friendly multiplayer games surge 144% across the last 18 months.

“In our business, we saw a surge in demand for online games throughout the lockdowns which is continuing this year as people realise that games are a good way to stay in touch all year round and particularly so at Christmas,” added Willis.
