market holiday: Is the stock market closed today?

NEW DELHI: Equity, currency and derivatives markets are closed for trading on Friday, September 10, as the Dalal Street and the nation celebrates Ganesh Chaturthi. Commodity markets are closed for the morning session but will open in the evening.

The bourses will reopen for trading on September 13, Monday.

On Thursday, the benchmark equity indices closed flat for another day after a lacklustre trading session. Media stocks were in demand, while bank and financial stocks saw selling pressure. Global cues were also mixed.

The 30-share Sensex rose 54.81 points or 0.09 per cent to close at 58,305. The index traded in a range of 250 points. Its broader peer NSE Nifty climbed 15.75 points or 0.09 per cent to 17,369.

Market breadth was in favour of the gainers as 1,844 stocks ended in the green, while 1,345 settled with cuts. As many as 196 stocks hit 52-week highs, mostly from the smallcap space. Meanwhile, 23 others hit 52-week lows, mostly from the microcap space. About 365 stocks hit upper circuit limits and 170 lower circuit limits.

Wall Street ended lower on Thursday after weekly jobless claims fell to a near 18-month low, allaying fears of a slowing economic recovery, but also stoking worries the Fed could move sooner than expected to scale back its accommodative policies. Microsoft and Amazon each declined about 1%, both among the stocks weighing most on the S&P 500 and Nasdaq.
