Dow opens nearly 200 points higher as stock market attempts


U.S. stock benchmarks opened modestly higher Tuesday morning, as Wall Street attempted to bounce back after the previous day’s slump led by technology companies. The Dow Jones Industrial Average
DJIA,

rose 164 points, or 0.5%, to around 34,148, the S&P 500 index
SPX,

added 21 points, or 0.5%, at 4,321, while the technology-laden Nasdaq Composite Index
COMP,

advanced 86 points, or 0.6%, to 14,340. Meanwhile, shares of Facebook Inc.
FB,

were up 0.4% a day after the social-media company slumped by nearly 5%. A whistleblower is set to testify about Facebook’s social-media practices later in the morning, which could weigh on the company’s stock.
