Tobias Levkovich, Citigroup’s longtime chief U.S. equity strategist, died earlier this month. He was a mentor and friend to numerous Barron’s writers and editors, and sharpened our thinking about investor psychology and financial markets.
Although Tobias had a heavy workload and traveled the world to meet with Citi colleagues and clients, many of whom recalled his unique combination of wit, wisdom, and kindness in online tributes, he always made time to break bread with Barron’s to talk shop and so much more.
We featured his predictions in our annual December market outlook, and he was a guest on Barron’s Live, our daily call with readers, late last year. Tobias had relatively subdued expectations for the market in 2021, partly because he felt a rotation away from megacap tech stocks would restrain the S&P 500’s gains. Typically, his explanation was entertaining: “It’s easier to pull a dog sled with huskies than with Chihuahuas.”
We are grateful for his insights and generosity, and will surely miss talking with him this December about huskies, Chihuahuas, and markets.
