The hypocrisy surrounding the politics of policing Communion is also revealing. When Donald Trump’s former attorney general William Barr, a conservative Catholic, played a key role in bringing back the federal death penalty, there were no calls from bishops to deny him the Eucharist, despite the fact that the catechism of the Catholic Church describes executions as always unacceptable. Barr even received an award honoring his “fidelity to the church” from the conservative National Catholic Prayer Breakfast in Washington.
