S&P 500 Pauses, Meme Stocks Jump


Broad U.S. stock indexes were quiet early Wednesday ahead of a Federal Reserve meeting, but below the surface a fresh frenzy broke out among meme stocks popular with individual investors.

The S&P 500 and the Dow Jones Industrial Average edged down 0.1% and 0.2% respectively Wednesday, while the technology-heavy Nasdaq Composite Index started the day flat. On Tuesday, the Dow closed above 36000 for the first time, while the other two indexes also set record highs.
